Build-A-Bear Workshop strives to provide a positive online experience for children. Build-A-Bear Workshop encourages families to enjoy our store together. We encourage parents and guardians to review this privacy policy. In it you will learn what information is collected, how it is collected, how we use the information, how we protect our data and your choices as a parent or guardian. Build-a-Bear Workshop collects information that you provide to us when you visit our stores in the U.S. and this website directed to U.S. Guests, such as when you register your friend, pay for a purchase, or book a party. We may collect additional personal information through this website, such as when you create an online Account, make a purchase, sign up for our email list and other email notifications, enter contests or sweepstakes, or submit job applications, order forms, or party reservations.
Passive collection
Our Build-A-Bear Workshop website may also collect information passively, through the use of cookies. A cookie is a small text file that writes to your hard drive. The cookie file contains your computer's IP address and a user ID. The user ID links any orders you have placed on our site to your personal information. You may provide Build-A-Bear Workshop with personally identifying information when you visit our stores or use our website. We may collect and use that information in a number of ways.
Purchase Information, Certificates, Tracking System, Promotions, Loyalty Programs and Party Reservations
In Store Purchasing
The information collected in our stores solely for the purpose of completing a purchase includes payment information and, if the purchaser requests that the item be sent to another recipient, shipping information, such as name, postal address and telephone number of the recipient. As described below, other information may be collected for the purpose of creating certificates, enrolling in our tracking system, in store promotions or loyalty programs, or reserving a party.
Online Store Purchasing
Guests must create an Account to make purchases from our online store. The information collected for the purpose of setting up the Account includes name, postal address, telephone number, email address and date of birth. Children under age 13 are not permitted to make purchases from our online store (See below for special rules that apply to the online collection of information from children under 13.). Build-A-Bear Workshop would not knowingly accept an online order from a child under age 13. We strongly recommend that parents monitor closely their child's activity when in the shopping area of our website and that parents, not children, do any online shopping at www.buildabear.com.
Creating Certificates
You supply your name, postal address, email address, gender, and birth date when you visit a Name Me Station at one of our stores or when you make a purchase at our Online Store. The computer then creates either a personalized birth certificate for your new friend.
ID tracking system
If your friend is lost, found, and returned to Build-A-Bear Workshop, your name and postal address is used to return a lost friend to you. We match the barcode inside your friend to the information you provided.
Promotions
From time to time, Build-A-Bear Workshop may offer you a special promotion. Information collected to enroll in these promotions may include name, postal address, gender, date of birth, email address, and telephone number.
Loyalty Programs
Build-A-Bear Workshop may offer loyalty or other kinds of preferred customer programs. Information collected to enroll in these programs may include name, postal address, gender, date of birth, email address, telephone number, and optional information such as names and birthdates of other family members.
Reserving a Party
When you reserve or book a party, the information collected--full name of host and Guest of Honor, Guest of Honor’s age, gender, postal address, phone number, and email address--is used to complete that party’s reservation. This information allows us to confirm the reservation and to contact you if the party would require a change of date. Your credit card type, number and expiration date are required for the party deposit.
How This Kind of Information is Used
When you provide your information in any of the ways described above, we may use your name, postal address, or email address to communicate with you about your purchase and other exciting things happening at our various stores and locations. We also may send you Certificates of Authenticity, birthday cards, guest surveys, thank you notes, and information about special promotions or events offered by Build-A-Bear Workshop and some of our marketing partners. We may also use aggregated age, gender, and geographic information to understand more about our Guests. You can always opt out of receiving such communications, as described below.
Email List, Guest Submissions, Online Contests and Sweepstakes, Job Applications and Ecards
In addition, you may provide information to us for special purposes, such as to join our email list, to tell us how much you enjoyed your shopping or party experience, to enter into contests or sweepstakes or to apply for a job. When you supply information for these special purposes, we use that information only for the purpose for which it is provided, as described below.

Build-A-Bear Workshop maintains an email list to which we send email messages and promotions from Build-A-Bear Workshop and some of our marketing partners. Those on our email list also receive an email newsletter, which contains information on new products, games, contests, exciting promotions and in-store events. To join the email list we ask for first name, email address, and date of birth. We do not use information provided for the list for any purpose other than to send the email messages and email newsletter.
Online Contest and sweepstakes
If Build-A-Bear Workshop offers an online contest or sweepstakes, for the purpose of contacting the winner, we collect first name and email address. If there are prizes in several categories, we may also collect age or birth date.
Testimonials and Guest submissions
If a Guest sends us a testimonial about our products, their experiences in one of our stores, or other submission of artwork or stories for use on our site or in printed materials, we ask only for first name, city and state. From time to time we may send a gift card or other reward for these submissions. In that case, we ask for either email address or postal address for delivery of the gift card.
Applying for a job
If you find a job position that interests you, you are encouraged to complete a mini-application online. We ask that you provide as much information about yourself as possible, including your full name, address, home phone, email address, and age (if under 18). This information is forwarded to our Human Resources team or to a Store Manager, depending on the position. Applications for individuals not hired are kept on file for one year. Online Applications from children under the age of 13 will NOT be accepted.
Sending an e-card
You supply your name and email address and the recipient’s name and email address when you send an e-card. Your email address is used to send you a copy of the e-card you sent or to notify you of receipt of the sent card. When you request confirmation of the cards you sent, you will receive an confirmatory email.
Submitting a Book Review
You may submit a review of a book you have read to Bearamy’s Book Club. We collect your first name and age and post them with your review.
How is the information protected?
Build-A-Bear Workshop maintains reasonable security measures, such as firewall, limited access, and SSL encryption technology, designed to help protect against loss, misuse, and alteration of Guest information collected by Build-A-Bear Workshop. All information collected via www.buildabear.com is stored on secured servers located our Build-A-Bear Workshop World Bearquarters in St. Louis, Missouri.
How is information shared with third parties?
Build-A-Bear Workshop does not release the personally identifiable information it collects from you to any unrelated third parties so that they may send you commercial promotions or offers for products or services. We do, however, share anonymous, aggregate information concerning the demographic makeup of our customers to unrelated third parties. Further, we may share your information with our service providers—that is, organizations that provide services to support Build-A-Bear Workshop functions, such as our mail processing company, payment processing companies, and market research firms. Online Collection of Information from Children Under 13
What information is collected online from children under 13 and how is it used?
Online Account
Children under 13 may set up an online account to browse our online store and create a wish list. Children under 13 must provide their parent’s email address and are not permitted to join the list without parental permission. Children under 13 are not, however, permitted to make purchases from our online store. Information requested to create an account includes email address, parent’s email address and date of birth. We use this information only to facilitate access to the child’s account.
Our email list
Build-A-Bear Workshop maintains an email list to which we send email messages and promotions from Build-A-Bear Workshop and some of our marketing partners. The sender’s email address is used to send a copy of the e-card or confirm receipt of the card. When the sender requests confirmation of the cards sent, they will receive a confirmatory email. These email addresses are not used for any other purpose.
Submitting a Book Review
Children under 13 may submit a review of a book they have read to Bearamy’s Book Club. We collect the child’s first name and age and post them with the review.

Shopping our Stores and Shopping Online
The information collected for the purpose of completing a purchase, including fulfilling a web order, is payment information, billing, and shipping information, such as name, postal address, telephone and email address. We also collect date of birth and gender of the recipient of the animal, provided that the recipient and the purchaser of the bear are one and the same person. If you are purchasing an animal for someone else, we will only ask for name, postal address, and telephone number of the recipient of the animal and will use this information only for the purpose of shipping the animal to its owner.
Purchasing from our Online Store is limited to those over age 18. Build-A-Bear Workshop does not knowingly accept online orders from a child under the age of 18. We strongly recommend that parents monitor closely their child's activity when in the shopping area of our website and that parents, not children, do any online shopping at www.buildabear.ca.
Creating a birth certificate or storybook
If you are 13 years of age or older or with the consent of your parents if you are under the age of 13, you supply your name, postal address, gender, and birth date when you visit a Name Me Station at one of our stores or when you make a purchase at our Online Store. The computer then creates either a personalized birth certificate or story book for your new animal friend. Children under the age of 13 who do not receive their parent's consent to supply us with their personally identifiable information will nonetheless be able to create a birth certificate and storybook for their animal friend, but we will ask them for their first name and gender, but not their last name, postal or email address or birth date.
Find-A-Bear® ID tracking system
If your animal is lost, found, and returned to Build-A-Bear Workshop, your name and postal address is used to return a lost animal to you. We match the barcode inside your animal to the information you provided.
Reserving a Build-A-Party
When you reserve or book a party online or in one of our stores, provided that you are 18 years of age or older, the information collected--full name of host and Guest of Honour, Guest of Honour's age, gender, postal address, phone number, and email address--is used to complete that party's reservation. This information allows Build-A-Bear Workshop to confirm the reservation and to contact you if the party would require a change of date. Your credit card type, number, and expiration date are required for the party deposit. In addition, we require legal guardian or parental consent of any child under the age of 13 who attends a Build-A-Bear Workshop party (or if the Guest of Honour is under the age of 13), if that child wants to be part of our Find-A-Bear ID program, as well as to permit us to communicate with our younger Guests about beary exciting things happening at Build-A-Bear Workshop, including flyers, special offers/coupons, birthday cards, and thank-you notes.
Thank you notes, special promotional mailers, birthday cards, and Certificates of Authenticity
When you make a purchase or book a party, we may use your name, postal address, or email address to communicate with you about your purchase and other beary exciting things happening at Build-A-Bear Workshop. We may use this information to send you Certificates of Authenticity (for some Beary Limited Edition Collectibear® friends), flyers, special offers/coupons, birthday cards, and thank you notes.
When you provide your name, address, and email address in any of the ways described above, we may use that information to contact you regarding beary special offers, promotions, and events at Build-A-Bear Workshop. We may also use aggregated age, gender, and geographic information to understand more about our Guests, provided that we obtain the consent of parents or legal guardians before we use the information about our Guests who are under the age of 13. You can always opt out of receiving such communications, as described below.
In addition, and only with the consent of your parents if you are under the age of 13, you may provide information to us for beary special purposes, such as our email list or to tell us how much you enjoyed your Build-A-Bear Workshop experience. When you supply information for these special purposes, described below, we use that information only for the purpose for which it is provided.

Build-A-Bear Workshop maintains an email list to which we send email messages and promotions approximately twice a month. Those on our email list receive our email newsletter, which contains information about new products and promotions, games, contests, and in-store events. To join the email list we ask for first name, email address, and parent's email address. We do not use information provided for the email list for any purpose other than to send the email messages, and to contact winners of our Email List Free Bear Giveaway. We will not send email messages to children under the age of 13 without their parents' or legal guardian's consent, and we will immediately notify parents and legal guardians to request their consent to add their child to our email list.
Contest and sweepstakes
In addition to our online Bear giveaway, Build-A-Bear Workshop may offer in-store contests or sweepstakes, for which we may collect, for the purpose of contacting the winner, first name, last name, postal address, and email address. If there are prizes in several categories, we may also collect age or birth date from you if you are 13 years of age or older, and only with the prior consent or notification of your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) if you are under the age of 13.
Testimonials and Guest submissions
If you send us a testimonial about our products, or describe your experiences in one of our stores, or if you send us any other submission of artwork or stories for use on our site or in printed materials, we will publicly identify you as the author of your submission by your first name, city and province only, and then only with your consent. We will specifically ask for parental consent before we use or display any submissions or testimonials that are sent from children under the age of 13. From time to time we may send a reward for submissions such as a Bear Buck$TM gift card. In that case, we ask for either email address or postal address for delivery of the gift card.
Wish List
The information collected for the purpose of creating a Wish List of products from our Build-A-Bear Workshop website include first name, last name, email address, a user assigned password, and, where applicable, for our Guests that are under the age of 13, a parent's email address. Wish Lists on our site are non-searchable and are secure, and can only be accessed if the owner of the Wish List chooses to send someone an email invitation to view the list.
Sending an e-card
You supply your name and email address and the recipient's name and email address when you send an e-card. Your email address is used to send you a copy of the e-card you sent or to notify you of receipt of the sent card. When you request confirmation of the cards you sent, you will see the list of email recipients.

When is personally identifiable information deleted?
Currently, personally identifiable information that we collect online is backed up nightly. No personally identifiable data is permanently deleted or destroyed, unless we are instructed to do so by you or by the parent or legal guardian of a child under the age of 13.
